Dreaming of Doing Good Better

Chris and I have managed to get our entire offices cleared out at Word Made Flesh (WMF) after nearly 20 years of working in that space—not an easy feat. At the end of of a very long week and a very long day of transitioning, we sat in what was left of Chris’ office, alone with each other, and in the solitude and silence of our thoughts and emotions. The WMF office holds so many memories for us and represents years of

community
service
ambition
optimism
idealism
courage
sacrifice

To the left of us hung one of two remaining items left in Chris’ office—a postcard of Mother Teresa. The other item hung before us, above the door—a San Damiano Cross (St. Francis’ cross). In the quiet, Mother’s earnest eyes penetrated us. And the Christ from the cross of the San Damiano gazed down at us.

Mother’s eyes brought me back to Calcutta during the early days with WMF…

the mystery of the agony and compassion of Christ’s presence among the poor…
our love for our global neighbors in poverty flooded my soul…
so much life lived and given…
so much yet unknown about tomorrow…
yet so much

energy and
life and
hope and
imagination and
possibility for building a global movement for doing good better.
